Forum: GratefulDead Subject: type of Dead Community?????

Hey all

Awhile back i got into a forum exchange that got a little less than pleasant all around. In this exchange i wished the party well and peace even if we had had harsh words. Then much to my sadness i was called hypocritical and naive. Then was also informed that the DeadHead community no longer subscribed to *hippie values* such as mutual respect and kindness or even peace and god forbid love!! Also that the Boys had become cynics in the last days and i'm assuming for the living fellas cynicism still rages??? I said that to ask this... are peace, love and such dead?? I sincerly hope not.

Peace:Skippy

I rarely get into the "trenches" w/ you all. Usually, I prefer to throw stuff out there - see if I can get you guys to Open your Minds. See what you guys come up with. I'll try a few words in response here. Don't expect me to do this often. I much prefer using this place to learn, have fun, enjoy music, and practice sharpening my graphics and HTML design chops.

I can not express the joy and relief I have gained from spending time around this site. The joy of finding new and incredible music. The relief of putting stuff out there to share - rare Tapes that I've had for years.

I've made posts on here starting 6 months ago. I decided to not be anonymous, secretive and have multiple personalities (user handles). Everyone knows who I am, where I live, and what I look like. I did this to myself - figuring that eventually, I might earn some credibility if I hung in there. I hoped this would lead to perhaps some respect. I wanted to make some Politcal Statements also. I figured some credibility would help sustain my statements. I tried not to rub it in anyone's face. I tried not to talk about myself - but rather, talk about the key issues we are facing these days, and what others are saying and doing.

Of course, the disadvantage of this is - when I get attacked on here - I can't "lose my cookies" on here. Everyone knows who I am. This tempers my responses hugely - often I find it best to ignore the riff-raff. But some people hate that - being ignored by one after a personal attack on him/her. They come after you even worse. Eventually, someone usually comes along and says for me what I cannot say. I'm just trying to Start a Movement. Like in the 60s. GD was in the Middle of it all.

These days - Our Republic has been stolen from us! I think all of us are under enormous pressure - and many of us either don't realize What's Up, or they are so stressed out that they can't function very well. Just a Theory. Seems real to me.

Wanna try to make this place better? Try being honest, and come out into the Light of Day. Wanna hide and be a bully, thug, spy or hacker - and take cheap shots at people on here? People will leave this place. Thanks for asking about this stuff. And thanks to those who responded.

See? I knew you were a "nice" guy (anyone that uses ":-)" is by defn, "nice", in my book).

Reading over most of these posts increases my confidence in the fact that try as we may, generally folks here are the sorts I am happy to call friends, and would be glad to interact with in the "real" world.

Hope things are well as you move into summer, such as it is, in your area.

Dunno about being a 'nice guy' - I have to say that this thread's precipitate slide into anarchy has fairly gladdened my cynical Caledonian heart ('cynical Caledonian' - you reckon that might be an oxymoron?).

Following on from your earier post, Master Tell I think maybe you get a little upset sometimes by my no-frills straight talking, which you might now and again see as a personal attack rather than a robust statement of views, which by and large is what it is. But let me tell you, the fact that I talk straightforwardly to you is a mark of respect, which you have definitely earned.

Thanks for that; and as "hippy-esque" as it may seem, I am proud of having earned that respect even if I have to watch my back (er...uh-oh...) or at least my typos.

I find it interesting that no one has told him to "head for DeadHook if you want that world, cause we are the 'anti-hook'"

The "friendly head site"...just Google it...peace, love and happiness, Dire notwithstanding.

Actually, though "they" and "we" set things up as if we (LMA) are the antichrist and we (Hook) are flowerchildren, as Dire points out, both places are just full of the usual folks with all their faults...including Dire, SDH, and me, at both places (hence the pronoun confusion above).

Likewise, I assure you! She was a beauty; somehow she made "thin" work (pardon my sexist digression--usually go for the full figured gals, if you take my meaning). And her other qualities were virtually unmatched, IMHO.

Thanks for bringing those memories back--think I have a DVD of that around here somewhere!

Yeah, cynicism and meanness still exists, sure. Even here. Things were a little better at Speeding Arrow, but even there there was one guy who got real defensive about his favorite Other One.

Anyway the point is that in order to recieve love, you must first give it. So just keep the hope of the hippie dream alive, and keep on being nice no matter how many are mean.

Being a kind hearted, loving, cynical, sarcastic bastard often gets me in hot water with the wife.

I've always been somewhat cynical and sarcastic but try to keep it to people who know me a little better. The whole peace & love thing are good but I think Tell is right in his reference to reality - as we age we realize the naivety of our youth and tend to grant younger folks less leeway in their naivety. I'm not too sure what I'm talking about here. My own experience goes something like this - young boy overjoyed to learn about Jesus in religion class and all of the 'do unto others' & love your nieghbor stuff and thinking wow that's great - that is just how I think and feel. Life should only get better with rules like these, then I happily went off to school and met more and more people and lo and behold the 'do unto others' rules don't work unless everybody follows them - so I turned cynical, had, and am having lots of fun, and do my best not to be an ass to strangers - at the same time feeling free to be an ass to family and friends.

Coming in late, as usual...

I figure I can't change anybody else, and that my own responsibility is merely to be the best self that I can be, moment to moment. On the forum, and elsewhere. Trouble is, I'm not always very good at it.

When this place is temporarily filled with anger and malice, I just ignore the threads at the center of the maelstrom. The rest of the community I have found to be generous, good-humored, smart, and articulate, and usually silent. When the crazies are bashing each other, I try to remember the backdrop of kind, knowledgable people smiling quietly on the sidelines.

Oh boy. Is this to be taken seriously? Are you tossing matches into the kerosene-soaked heart of the forum to see what pretty flames you can set a-flickering? Are you really as innocent, naïve and sensitive a soul as you portray yourself? (Cynicism in action.) Ah well. It's been one of those days so I'll let off a little steam.

Speaking as 'the party' concerned (it's ok to use my name, you know - you needn't worry about sparing my blushes) let me inform you that this particular outpost of the Grateful Dead fanbase has never subscribed to any peace and love 'hippy values', thought I certainly don't see that as any barrier to my enjoying the music or participating in this forum. I like to keep an open mind as regards the fine fellows festooning these parts - but it's not so open that you can hear the wind whistling through.

I care, I share, but I don't do it on automatic pilot. I'm not here to find bland agreement and ego massages, I like the rough and tumble of honest debate and I prefer a sarcastic savour to a sensitive sweetness. I speak as I find and you can frankly like that or leave it alone.

I am certainly inclined towards cynicism - but if you go back you'll see that what JOTS said in his response to you was that the Dead were 'smart smartasses with sharp tongues and smart wit' (my kind of people really) - he did not say that they were cynical. That's a misreading on your part.

Respect in my view isn't something you get handed out for free just because you turned up. Respect is something you earn. Unearned respect is a devalued currency - it isn't going to get you too far.

There is no 'Dead community' - there's just a wildly varied bunch of individuals who just happen to have found common cause in a liking for a particular group of musicians. Hell, they argue about which era of the band's history was best with a fervor that would put any religious fundamentalist to shame. And if you can't see that - then I'm still going to call you naive.

Hey Skip - if there is such a thing as forum etiquette (yes - an odd concept I know) then one of the basics, I think, is to reply directly to a person's post if you want to make a point to that person. I tend to rely a lot (and I don't think I'm alone here) on receiving email when someone responds to a post of mine. With a long thread with many branches you can't always guarantee that the person you're talking to is going to see your comment if it's tagged on to another person's post.

I hope that made some sort of sense!

Oh yes - and if I were the only person allowed to make comments around here I'd leave - other people's comments are what I come for, including yours.

You may now carry on fucking yourself, both upstairs, downstairs and in m'lady's chamber.

Hey Rob

nice to talk to you directly. I apologize for the breach of etiqutte. I hadn't realize quite how far into anarchy this thread has gotten.

Peace

Warning: If he asked you if he can "toss" your caber, back away slowly and run for the nearest exit.

Skippy,
It can get chippy in here, no doubt. Most folks always love new people and fresh perspectives including myself so please keep posting.

In response to your last part about the band at the end. I can't say for sure but what I can say from my point of view is that in the end the only guy who truly wanted to be there on a night to night basis was Welnick and it shows from the bad performances not only by Garcia in his state, but the remainder of the band as well. If that's cynical so be it but I know they were a shadow of themselves not only musically but effort wise.

I pretty much have to agree with Lobster on that one. The 90's had its ups and downs. Personally I shy away from 94 on. This made me think how much longer the machine that was the Grateful Dead could have gone on? Well if Jerry didn't die.

Unfortunately, our "community" suffers from the same issues as any other group of people. While I believe that for the most part we are able to rise above the usual bickering and squabbling that mark so many other forums, we are by no means immune from the same. I truly believe that the majority of folks here do try to live by the values you mentioned, but there are times that this is not the case. Yes, we are human and as such are prone to all the faults as well as kindness associated with our species. Would I like to see nothing but flowers and good vibes here? I'm not so sure I would. Things would get mighty boring around these parts. I think it too much to expect the everyone here show only the good side of themselves. We encourage honesty and frank discussions and I'd hate to see that go.
That said, I do not, in any way, condone discussions that descend into personal attacks, but I do accept them as part of any community and almost inevitable. No matter what we say or do, it's gonna happen.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Type A, with age related cynicism...

I'll bite...I can at least speak to my experience here: it was one of love, peace, happiness and sharing, with an emphasis on the latter, when I first "joined up" almost two years ago. Sure, there is a lot of cynicism (realism redefined?) in part because as one ages, I think that a natural progression occurs along those lines, but it is tempered with a great deal of sincere interest in the well-being of our fellow travelers joined thru this new age experience of web based communication (that, in itself, contributes to miscommunications and misunderstandings on a regular basis; eg, Rob and I regularly find ourselves at odds with one another only to recognize in the end, words got in the way rather than there being fundamental barriers between us on any number of issues).

When describing the responses of the first three individuals that contacted me "off site" following my first post hereabouts, EVERYONE that hears my tales of kindness (ie, all the music that was shared with me for no personal gain on the part of the responders), express to me that "we" somehow are keeping alive some of the positive attributes you allude to (ie, of the 60s, or whatever).

Does that mean that we are not at times a bit insensitive, a bit abrupt or too quick with a sarcastic remark? Of course not; but when you come down to it, most of the consistent posters here are at heart "good people" that by their actions do embody the best of the qualities you fear have fallen to the side.

So, my take on it is to rest easy in the comfort of knowing we forumites, as a group, probably do live up to that cliched characterization of peace, kindness and sharing with our fellowhumankind.
